With this species loss, humanity is forfeiting opportunities to understand the history of life, to better predict the future of the living world, and to make beneficial discoveries in the domains of food, fiber, fuel, pharmaceuticals, and bio‐inspired innovation. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is now in the fourth year of the 10‐year Dimensions of Biodiversity program to characterize the least‐well‐known aspects of the diversity of life on Earth. NSF funded 14 new projects in FY 2012 bringing the total number of active projects to 41.
